Iran's chief negotiator warns of 'corresponding measures' if US, Israel fail to honor deal

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of the Iranian parliament and the country's chief negotiator with the United States, again urged Washington and Israel to finalize a ceasefire memorandum of understanding.

Speaking with Igor Sergeyenko, speaker of the Belarusian lower house of parliament, who visited Tehran to pay his respects at the funeral of Supreme Leader Khamenei, Ghalibaf said Thursday that Iran would demand full compliance with any agreement. "If the United States and the Zionist regime (Israel) do not fulfill their commitments, Iran will resume corresponding measures," he said, according to Iran's ISNA news agency.

He said the United States had come to fully realize it could not confront Iran militarily. "They made extensive efforts to achieve their objectives but failed, and ultimately requested a truce themselves," he said.

Ghalibaf also said US attempts to draw NATO and other allies into the war had likewise failed.

"The United States claimed it had destroyed Iran's missile capabilities, but we continue to see Iranian missiles striking their targets," he said. He added that both allies and adversaries now viewed this reality as evidence of a US defeat.

He said Iran had begun building closer ties with regional countries and was working with its neighbors to block US intervention in the region.

Ghalibaf said expanded cooperation between Iran and Belarus was necessary. He also expressed hope that countries opposed to US unilateralism would deepen their coordination through frameworks such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation to mount a collective response.

Sergeyenko expressed condolences over Khamenei's death and condemned Israel's attacks on Iran, ISNA reported.

"We condemn the attacks on the Iranian people and their infrastructure," he said. "Iran was our friend in the past, is our friend now, and will remain our friend in the future."
