Samwoo Sangi announced it has developed an all-in-one Class D metal fire extinguisher capable of tackling fires involving a range of metals — including lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium and titanium — with a single unit.
Conventional Class D metal fire extinguishers typically require a different product for each type of metal involved. Industrial sites have had to keep multiple extinguishers on hand, creating management and operational inconveniences.
Samwoo Sangi said the new product is designed to handle various metal fires with a single extinguisher, and the company expects it to improve safety management efficiency at industrial sites.
According to the company, the extinguisher uses a ceramic porous-body-based extinguishing agent developed through a government research and development project. Conventional Class D agents focus on smothering fires by cutting off oxygen, but the new product combines a cooling function that absorbs heat from ultra-high-temperature metal fires with a smothering function that blocks oxygen.
Demand is expected to grow as the importance of metal fire response increases across industries where metal use is expanding — including electric vehicles, energy storage systems, semiconductors, data centers, aerospace and defense.
Samwoo Sangi said it is currently seeking type approval from the Korea Fire Institute and recorded a 97 percent discharge rate in internal testing. The company plans to begin supplying domestic industrial sites and pursue overseas market entry once the certification process is complete.
"We focused on improving the way metal-specific extinguishers have traditionally been operated, to enhance safety and convenience at industrial sites," a Samwoo Sangi official said. "Once domestic certification is complete, we will actively pursue entry into the global industrial safety market."
