Nowon-gu District Mayor Seo Jun-o attended "A Day Like a Gem," an event held Wednesday at Seoul Dongcheon School.
"A Day Like a Gem" is a district program planned and run by parents in partnership with local schools. Operating since 2016, the program has grown on the strength of high satisfaction rates in educational settings — this year, the number of participating schools expanded from 15 last year to 23, and the budget allocated to support those schools increased substantially as well.
Seoul Dongcheon School, which Seo visited Wednesday, is a special education school. Parents organized a series of activities to give students lasting memories: a physical activity session in the form of a summer sports day, a health-focused craft workshop on making mosquito repellent, and a hands-on kiosk and shopping experience called "Dongcheon Mart."
Seo joined teachers, parents and students in the activities and exchanged views on the district's education policy. He had earlier outlined his education agenda as part of his ninth elected-term vision, which includes expanding education expense subsidies, building a neighborhood library network within a five-minute walk of residents' homes, creating a global lifelong-learning environment and establishing a new youth mental health center.
"A program where parents take the lead and connect with children is a great model for an education community built on the partnership of families, the local community and schools," Seo said. "I will work to build an education ecosystem together with the community, for the bright days ahead of our children."
