Yeongam-gun in South Jeolla Province announced Friday that it will welcome tourists to the opening of Wolchulsan Gichan Land with a lineup of experience programs showcasing the region's distinct character, alongside the usual water activities.
The county will run a freshwater eel-catching event called "Giuncan Cheonha Jangeo Catching Experience" and a promotional event for products developed under the Rural New Vitality Plus project at Wolchulsan Gichan Land, which opens Saturday.
The eel-catching event will be held at Pool No. 7 at Gichan Land starting at 3:40 p.m. Saturday.
Those wishing to participate can pick up a numbered ticket on a first-come, first-served basis at the event booth from 11 a.m. that day.
Participants who catch a freshwater eel released into the pool may exchange it for a cleaned eel to take home, with a limit of two eels per person.
A total of 200 kilograms — roughly 600 eels — have been prepared for the event.
The Yeongam Freshwater Eel Producers Association, which donated the eels, plans to use the occasion to promote "Giuncan Cheonha Jangeo," the county's signature freshwater eel, to tourists.
From Saturday through Aug. 16, a promotional event for locally developed products will also be held every weekend at Gichan Land, with the Rural New Vitality Plus project task force participating.
Visitors can sample free beverages made from Yeongam sweet potatoes and vinegar drinks made from local agricultural produce. Product sales and social media certification events will also be offered.
"I hope Gichan Land will establish itself as a summer tourism destination where visitors can experience the flavors and attractions of Yeongam, beyond just water activities," Yeongam County Chief Woo Seung-hee said.
