A woman in her 50s who spread false claims on social media alleging that prominent politicians had committed serious crimes — including murder and prostitution — has been handed over to prosecutors in custody.
The Seoul Yeongdeungpo Police Station said Friday it had forwarded the woman, identified only as A, to prosecutors on charges of defamation under the Information and Communications Network Act.
A is accused of posting false content on her social media accounts on three separate occasions between August and September 2024, claiming that specific politicians who had served as party leaders and floor leaders had committed violent crimes.
Investigators found that A wrote posts falsely alleging that certain Assembly members had killed people while using drugs at prostitution establishments, accepted bribes worth tens to hundreds of billions of won, and sexually assaulted dozens of people.
Police arrested A on Friday, July 3, after receiving a complaint filed by the party to which the affected lawmakers belong.
