KakaoTalk rolls out 6th regular update, expanding 'ChatGPT for Kakao' to PC

Kakao has expanded the AI experience within KakaoTalk, bringing "ChatGPT for Kakao" to the desktop version of the app and adding a chat summary feature.

Kakao said Wednesday it released KakaoTalk's sixth regular update (v26.6.0), introducing a range of new features aimed at improving user convenience.

The company extended ChatGPT for Kakao to the KakaoTalk PC version. Users can now access the service on desktop while retaining the same settings and conversation state from their mobile devices, without having to re-enter preferences or repeat questions. The feature is accessible via the "ChatGPT" chip at the top of the chat tab.

Kakao also added a message summary feature for chat rooms, designed to help users quickly catch up on conversations they have missed. Tapping the "Summarize conversation" button inside a chat room brings up a condensed overview of key messages. Users can review the highlights before jumping back into a chat room they have not visited in a while.

The update also introduced a feature that lets users regenerate photos shared in chat rooms using ChatGPT Image 2.0. After selecting an image in a chat room and tapping "Create with AI" in the upper right corner, users can apply styles such as "anime" or "colored pencil drawing."

Kakao said users can transform images shared during conversations into new formats — such as cartoons or illustrations — without saving them separately. The feature is also available through the new post registration option on a user's profile.

In addition, Kakao applied a chatbot (beta) function to open chat rooms. Users can query various bots for information without leaving the chat room. Once a chat room host invites a chatbot of their choice, participants can ask it questions — about the weather, share prices or other topics — and continue the conversation without switching screens.

The update also added the ability to delete messages sent through KakaoTalk Channel chats within 24 hours of sending.

The new features are available on KakaoTalk v26.6.0 and later.

"We have expanded the user experience so that people can conveniently use AI across KakaoTalk's various chat environments," a Kakao official said. "We will continue to refine our service based on user feedback, so that everyday communication and AI experiences connect naturally."
