Commuters who lose belongings on the Seoul subway will soon be able to have them delivered to their door, without visiting a lost-and-found center in person. CJ Logistics will take over delivery of Seoul subway lost-and-found items as part of a push to expand everyday logistics services in the public sector.
CJ Logistics signed an MOU with Seoul Metro Engineering on Tuesday at the company's headquarters in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, to operate a lost-and-found home delivery service, the company announced Wednesday. Seoul Metro Engineering President Yoo Woong-seok and CJ Logistics O-NE Division Head Yoon Jae-seung attended the signing.
Seoul Metro Engineering is a subsidiary of Seoul Metro, responsible for maintaining subway facilities and operating lost-and-found centers across the Seoul subway network. More than 160,000 lost items were reported on the Seoul subway last year.
Until now, passengers who lost items on the subway typically had to visit a lost-and-found center in person to retrieve them. Those living outside Seoul or unable to visit during business hours often faced significant inconvenience getting their belongings back.
The new service is designed to eliminate that hassle. Starting Monday, customers can contact the lost-and-found center to confirm their item is being held, complete an identity verification process, and then book a delivery and pay the shipping fee through the CJ Logistics website or the O-NE app.
Seoul Metro Engineering will then package the item and hand it off to CJ Logistics, which will deliver it to the address the customer specifies. Customers can receive their belongings at home, at work or any other location of their choosing — no visit required.
The two companies expect the partnership to boost both the lost-item recovery rate and overall convenience for commuters. The service is expected to be particularly helpful for people living outside the greater Seoul area, elderly passengers and working adults who find it difficult to visit a lost-and-found center in person.
CJ Logistics and Seoul Metro Engineering also agreed to establish a joint system for handling customer inquiries and complaints. They plan to analyze service performance on an ongoing basis and make improvements to the intake, packaging and delivery processes as needed.
CJ Logistics has recently been broadening its everyday logistics services beyond standard parcel delivery, focusing on reducing inconveniences in daily life. The subway lost-and-found delivery service is notable as a community-oriented offering that connects a public institution with a private logistics network. It applies existing parcel infrastructure to citizen convenience services while capturing public-sector logistics demand.
"We expect Seoul subway users to be able to retrieve their lost items more easily and conveniently by leveraging CJ Logistics' nationwide logistics network," Yoon said. "We will continue to introduce community-focused logistics services that address everyday inconveniences for our customers."
