Donghae in Gangwon Province has received a minister's commendation for running an integrated health promotion project spanning 10 areas, including physical activity, nutrition, smoking cessation, alcohol reduction, oral health, cardiovascular disease prevention, atopy and asthma management, women's and children's health, mobile healthcare and home health visits.
The Donghae Public Health Center was recognized for its efforts to promote healthy lifestyles and prevent chronic disease among residents. It was named an outstanding institution in the comprehensive community integrated health promotion category at the Ministry of Health and Welfare's "2026 Local Government Health Promotion Project Performance Competition," earning a minister's commendation.
According to central and local government officials Wednesday, Donghae ranked first in Gangwon Province in the 2025 Community Health Survey's preliminary results for blood pressure awareness (81.2 percent) and blood glucose awareness (55.3 percent). The city also achieved a 100 percent sustained participation rate in its mobile healthcare program and was named an outstanding institution for atopy and asthma prevention management.
The award reflects a systematic approach to the city's integrated health promotion project — from drawing up plans that address local health issues, to running resident-participatory programs and managing outcomes.
Hong Jong-ran, head of the health policy division, said the recognition was "a precious achievement made together by residents and staff alike," adding that the city would "continue to expand community-tailored health promotion projects so that residents can practice healthy lifestyles."
