Uiseong-gun chief holds inaugural press conference, vows to put communication with residents first

Choi Yu-cheol, chief of Uiseong-gun in North Gyeongsang Province, laid out his vision for the ninth directly elected term Wednesday, putting communication with residents at the center of his agenda as he outlined plans to build what he called a "happy and prosperous Uiseong."

Choi held an inaugural press conference Wednesday afternoon at the county office's second-floor conference room, where he outlined his administrative priorities and key projects for the term.

Taking office as the 46th chief of Uiseong-gun, Choi introduced seven governing directions and core policies centered on his stated goal of a "happy and prosperous Uiseong," then fielded questions from reporters for about 40 minutes.

Asked about the Daegu-North Gyeongsang Province integrated new airport project, Choi said Uiseong-gun would "actively fulfill the roles it can take on independently, while continuing to communicate with residents in areas slated for airport relocation and reflecting their diverse opinions in policy."

On measures to counter population decline driven by rapid aging, he identified job creation and expanded residential support for young people and newlyweds as key priorities to encourage them to settle in the region.

He said he expects construction of the integrated new airport to play a positive role not only in creating quality jobs and revitalizing the local economy, but also in drawing new residents to the area.

Choi also addressed questions on reforming public service culture, reorganizing local festivals and the county's organizational direction, explaining his governing philosophy and plans for each.

With the launch of the ninth directly elected term, Uiseong-gun said it will strengthen communication with residents and move swiftly to advance a range of policies aimed at resolving local issues and securing future growth drivers.

"Communication with residents is always at the heart of county governance," Choi said. "I will listen carefully even to the smallest voices and practice open, attentive, swift and transparent administration to build a warm Uiseong where no one is left struggling."
