Yongin mayor vows to minimize storm damage across city

Yongin Special City Mayor Lee Sang-il pledged to step up disaster preparedness to prevent casualties and property damage as heavy rain is expected to continue. He said he would closely inspect flood-prone areas not only in Cheoin-gu but also in Giheung-gu and Suji-gu to minimize losses from summer downpours.

Lee visited a housing complex in Jinmok-ri, Namsa-eup, Cheoin-gu on Wednesday to inspect damage caused by torrential rain.

At the scene, Lee examined a collapsed retaining wall at the complex and the surrounding walkways, and listened to residents' concerns.

The site was hit early Tuesday when heavy rain brought down two retaining walls standing 3 meters high and ruptured a water supply pipe.

Lee reviewed the damage firsthand and heard from residents, then discussed response measures with officials from the city's disaster management office and the Cheoin-gu district office.

Residents asked Lee to take safety measures regarding retaining walls at risk of further collapse.

Lee ordered steps to prevent additional collapses and secondary damage.
