The search for South Korea's finest young man to embody the intellect and dignity of Gyeseo Seong I-seong — the real-life model for Yi Mongnyong in the classic tale "Chunhyangjeon" — has reached its final stage.
Bonghwa-gun announced Monday that 12 finalists had been selected through an intense second preliminary round held at the Andong MBC Open Hall on July 11.
The second preliminary drew a diverse field of young contestants, including models, actors, a mathematics instructor and a YouTuber with hundreds of thousands of subscribers, drawing considerable attention.
The finalists, drawn from a wide range of professions, were praised for showcasing unconventional charm and setting a new standard for a 21st-century Yi Mongnyong.
The 12 finalists are now in intensive preparation for the main competition, set for Sunday.
The winner — who will claim a total purse of 14 million won ($9,400), including a grand prize of 7 million won, and serve as an ambassador for Bonghwa-gun's culture and tourism — will be crowned Sunday on a special stage at the Bonghwa Euneo Festival.
"The passionate performances these 12 contestants have prepared will be a highlight of the Bonghwa Euneo Festival," Bonghwa-gun Mayor Choi Gi-yeong said. "We hope everyone will come out to the festival and cheer on their bold new challenge."
