Vance welcomes baby boy — first child born to sitting VP couple at White House in 150 years

Vice President J.D. Vance announced the birth of a son Monday and expressed gratitude to White House medical staff.

Vance posted the news on social media Sunday, writing: "I'm overjoyed to share that on Monday morning, July 20, our son Alec Neel Vance was born."

"Usha and the baby are both healthy and comfortable, and our kids are absolutely thrilled to meet their little brother," he added, saying that "the outstanding military doctors and staff at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit have been such a blessing to us. I'm deeply grateful to everyone who cared for our family."

Alec is Vance's fourth child. In January, he announced the pregnancy on social media, writing that "Usha and the baby are both healthy" and that the family was eagerly awaiting the arrival expected in late July.

According to the White House Historical Association, the birth is the first to a sitting vice president and spouse since Schuyler Colfax and Ellen Wade in 1870, roughly 150 years ago. Earlier, in 1829, John C. Calhoun and his wife Floride Bonneau had a son, William, while Calhoun was serving as vice president.

The Vances met at Yale Law School and married in 2014. Usha is of Indian immigrant descent, and the couple already had three children — sons Ewan, 9, and Vivek, 6, and daughter Mirabel, 4. The three children attended Donald Trump's presidential inauguration last year.

Meanwhile, births have been coming in quick succession at the White House. In May, press secretary Karoline Leavitt gave birth to a daughter, Viviana, and Katie Miller, spouse of Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller — the architect of the Trump administration's immigration policy — recently welcomed her fourth child.
