Yeongcheon City Council opens 253rd extraordinary session

The Yeongcheon City Council in North Gyeongsang Province opened its 253rd extraordinary session Monday, kicking off a 10-day schedule that runs through July 29.

At the first plenary session that day, the council voted on three items, including a resolution to set the session period for the 253rd extraordinary session and a resolution to fix the date for the first regular session convening.

The detailed schedule calls for the council to receive major municipal policy briefings from Tuesday through July 27, excluding two public holidays, followed by standing committee reviews of ordinance bills and other agenda items on July 28. The session is set to conclude July 29 at the seventh plenary session, where related items will be put to a final vote.

The standing committees are expected to take up three items in depth, including a partial amendment to the Yeongcheon City ordinance on support for population-growth initiatives.

Council Speaker Ha Gi-tae said in his opening remarks that the council would "carefully examine the executive branch's key work reports and offer reasonable alternatives on pending issues during this extraordinary session — the first full legislative activity since the launch of the 10th council — to take a strong first step toward responsible governance that citizens can trust."
