Broadcaster Shin Dong-yeop's daughter gets into Seoul National University — and his parenting philosophy is simple

Broadcaster Shin Dong-yeop has shared his parenting philosophy after his daughter gained admission to Seoul National University this year — and it comes down to one thing: greet people.

Shin appeared on singer Sung Si-kyung's YouTube channel Friday to talk about how he raises his children.

"There's something I bring up fairly often with my son and daughter," he said. "I don't hover or nag them, but I do tell them: greet people properly."

He went on to say, "When the security guard at our apartment building greets us warmly, I tell them to say hello back — and to greet everyone, whether it's family or anyone else."

Shin explained his reasoning: as fewer people bother with greetings these days, those who still do will stand out later in life.

Meanwhile, Shin married Seon Hye-yun, a former MBC entertainment producer, in 2006. The couple have a son and a daughter.

Their daughter, Shin Ji-hyo, majored in ballet at Seonhwa Arts High School and made headlines after it emerged she had been accepted by both Seoul National University and the Korea National University of Arts. She ultimately chose the physical education program at Seoul National University's College of Education, making her a junior alumna of her mother — Seon Hye-yun graduated from the same university with a degree in German language education.
