Suncheon selected as host city for the 2027 World Taekwondo Hanmadang, with the event expected to draw visitors and boost hotels, restaurants, shops and tourism across the region
Suncheon has been named the host city for the 2027 World Taekwondo Hanmadang, as the 2026 edition of the global taekwondo festival — organized by Kukkiwon — wrapped up in Seoul on Wednesday.
This year's festival drew more than 5,000 participants from 62 countries, competing over five days from Saturday through Wednesday across 15 categories and 170 divisions in events including poomsae and board-breaking.
The 2027 edition is scheduled for late July next year, running four nights and five days at Palma Gymnasium in Yeonhyang-dong, Suncheon. More than 6,000 athletes and officials from around 60 countries are expected to take part.
Securing the event is expected to raise Suncheon's profile as an international sports city while generating a significant economic ripple effect for local businesses — including restaurants and hotels — through an influx of domestic and international visitors.
"We will do our utmost to prepare for a successful event that showcases Suncheon's outstanding natural ecology, culture and tourism resources to audiences at home and abroad, while also injecting new energy into the local economy," Mayor Son Hun-mo said.
The 2027 World Taekwondo Hanmadang will be co-hosted by Kukkiwon and Suncheon city, with the World Taekwondo Hanmadang Organizing Committee overseeing operations.
