South Korea's health supplement industry is rapidly expanding beyond the domestic market to become a major player on the global stage. Following the success of K-beauty and K-food, K-health supplements are emerging as a key export category, riding a worldwide wellness trend.
Huons N, the health supplement arm of Huons Group, is accelerating its push into global markets by completing an integrated value chain spanning research and development, functional ingredient sourcing, manufacturing and international certification.
In the global health supplement market, overseas buyers and consumers increasingly prioritize scientifically backed functional ingredients and rigorous quality management over brand recognition alone. Huons N has overhauled its organizational and manufacturing structure to get ahead of this shift, positioning itself for broad-based export growth.
Huons N absorbed BioRojet, a specialized health supplement manufacturer, in June, bringing production and manufacturing capabilities fully in-house. The merger unified brand planning and manufacturing under a single organization, enabling faster decision-making and more agile responses to rapidly shifting domestic and international market conditions. The integration gave Huons N an all-round production capability covering six dosage forms — including liquid, powder, tablet and hard capsule — and nine packaging types. It also added BioRojet's FSSC 22000 certification, an international food safety management standard, establishing a quality control system that meets global benchmarks.
Then on Sunday, Huons N completed an expansion of its Chuncheon factory in Dongnae-myeon, Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, further upgrading its large-scale production infrastructure. The expansion tripled the factory's ethanol extraction capacity to 10,000 tons per year. The addition of a new water extraction facility with an annual capacity of 6,500 tons brings total annual extraction and manufacturing capacity to 16,500 tons.
Alongside the manufacturing expansion, a key growth pillar for Huons N is its R&D competitiveness built around "individually recognized ingredients" approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. Such ingredients require extensive development time and cost, as they must pass rigorous ministry review to verify both efficacy and safety. The payoff is the ability to offer differentiated, high-value products backed by exclusive rights. Huons N is concentrating its R&D capabilities across a range of areas including women's health, men's health and cognitive health.
Its flagship women's menopause probiotic brand, Menolacto, surpassed cumulative sales of 200 billion won ($141 million) as of the end of last year, cementing its position as a premium brand in South Korea's women's health supplement market. The recently launched Injicore is a cognitive health product whose main ingredient is "hwangchil tree leaf and stem extract," an individually recognized ingredient developed in-house by Huons N. Available in an easy-to-take capsule form, it combines the primary ingredient with 28 supplementary components — including amino acids, vitamins and minerals, and phosphatidylserine — in an optimized ratio.
The men's health portfolio has also been strengthened with individually recognized ingredients. Huons N's proprietary medicinal plant material "hagocho extract powder" — derived from self-heal (Prunella vulgaris) — received individual recognition from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety on Sunday for the functional claim "may help support prostate health." The recognition reflects the company's work to standardize the active compounds in hagocho, a plant long used in traditional East Asian medicine, and establish an optimal extraction process to scientifically verify its efficacy. Huons N plans to further diversify its men's health lineup, building on its existing product "Prostate Sajunja Premium."
Research into next-generation body fat reduction ingredients is also yielding results. Huons N has completed human clinical trials on two proprietary microbial materials — a live probiotic strain, Propionibacterium freudenreichii MJ2 (MJ2 Probiotics), and a heat-treated postbiotic derived from Bifidobacterium longum HN001 (HN001 Postbiotics) — demonstrating body fat reduction efficacy in both cases. Based on those results, the company has filed applications with the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for individual recognition of both ingredients under the functional claim "may help reduce body fat."
By overcoming its past dependence on outsourced production and external ingredient sourcing, and completing a value chain that runs from ingredient development through large-scale in-house manufacturing to global quality certification, Huons N has drawn recognition as a model for shifting the health supplement industry from a marketing-driven approach to one centered on technology and productivity.
"By building an integrated value chain that covers research and development, manufacturing and sales, we have secured unrivaled competitiveness in the health supplement market," said Son Dong-cheol, chief executive of Huons N. "We will continue to secure differentiated functional ingredients through sustained R&D, and actively pursue the global wellness market by organically connecting our production infrastructure, international certifications and global retail network."
