'Why do delivery guys use the elevator?' Resident beats worker with cane over door he didn't close

A delivery worker making rounds at a luxury apartment complex in Seoul was beaten with a cane by a resident who wrongly believed the worker had closed the elevator door on him — when in fact another resident had pressed the close button.

According to JTBC's "Sageon Banjang," a TV news program, the delivery worker, identified only as A, a man in his 40s, was assaulted on July 16 while delivering packages at an apartment complex in Yongsan-gu, Seoul.

A said that as the elevator reached the first floor and the doors opened, an elderly male resident struck him in the solar plexus with a cane.

The assault was captured in full on a body camera A was wearing to prevent misdeliveries.

In the footage, A protests, "Are you hitting me?" The man shouts back, "You saw me coming and just went up anyway, you punk."

The man also knocked a delivery box off the floor with his hand. He then hurled an expletive at A before swinging his cane toward A's groin. A tried to block the blow and was struck in the thigh.

A told the man, "Why are you hitting me? I'm going to report this," but the man continued his verbal abuse, saying, "Go ahead and report it" and "I should just smack you."

A was later diagnosed with a rib sprain and chest contusion. He said he did not immediately understand why he had been attacked, but later realized — after reviewing the body camera footage — that the man had mistakenly believed he had ridden the elevator up without letting him on.

At the time, A had been inside the elevator organizing packages on the floor. It was another resident riding with him who had pressed the door-close button.

A said the resident had long shown hostility toward delivery workers, at one point saying, "Why do delivery guys use the elevator?" A said he had endured the mistreatment out of fear of losing his job at the building, but filed a complaint with police after the resident offered no apology.

The case has since been referred to prosecutors.
