Seoul Metropolitan Council Speaker Im Man-gyun presented the 12th Assembly's first speaker citation to 25 environmental workers at a ceremony Friday morning.
Im said he pursued the inaugural citation to recognize environmental workers who protect citizens' everyday lives in ways that go unseen, viewing that quiet service as more important than visible achievements or measurable results.
"I believe a pleasant urban environment has been the single biggest factor in Seoul's rise as a global tourism destination welcoming 15 million foreign tourists," Im said. "The Seoul Metropolitan Council will look more closely after your working conditions and provide institutional support so that environmental workers can do their jobs more safely."
The council said it plans to continue identifying unsung contributors across various fields who protect citizens' daily lives and honor them with future citations.
