Pohang Mayor Park Yong-seon received the grand prize in the promotion and advocacy category at the 16th Proud Republic of Korea Mugunghwa Awards, the city announced Monday.
The awards, organized by the Korea Mugunghwa Arts Association and the Korea Mugunghwa Organizations Federation, recognize individuals who have contributed to spreading the cultural value of the mugunghwa — South Korea's national flower, the rose of Sharon — and fostering patriotism. The ceremony was held Aug. 6 at the National Assembly members' office building.
Park was recognized for his efforts to promote the mugunghwa's historical and cultural significance, including supporting the planting and maintenance of the flower, backing public awareness campaigns, and expanding citizen participation in mugunghwa-related activities.
"I will continue to expand planting, maintenance and promotional activities to spread awareness of the value and meaning of the mugunghwa," Park said.
