Hana Financial Group to restore 2,000 grave markers at national cemeteries

Hana Financial Group announced plans to refurbish cemetery grounds and improve conditions for visitors paying their respects, marking the 81st anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule.

The group signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans at Seoul National Cemetery in Dongjak-gu, Seoul, on Monday, the group said Tuesday.

Under the agreement, Hana Financial Group will restore about 2,000 deteriorating stone grave markers at the independence patriots' section of the National Daejeon Cemetery and the soldiers' section of Seoul National Cemetery.

Seoul National Cemetery, now more than 70 years old, has seen a growing number of markers in need of repair. The number of unattended graves — where direct family members have died — has also been rising, increasing the need for sustained upkeep. Hana Financial Group plans to repaint aging headstones, repair grout lines and remove staining to improve the grounds and strengthen the honor shown to those who served the nation.

The group also plans to expand facilities for visitors. It will install a total of 15 smart shade structures — 10 at the National Daejeon Cemetery and five at Seoul National Cemetery — positioned near shuttle bus waiting areas and main pedestrian routes.

The structures run on solar power and open and close automatically in response to temperature and wind speed. They also feature remote-control capability, allowing more efficient operation during heat waves and other weather events.

Minister Kwon O-eul and Hana Financial Group Chairman Ham Young-joo attended the signing ceremony Monday. The two sides also discussed ways to cooperate on spreading a culture of veterans' appreciation and supporting those who served the nation and their families.

"The noble sacrifice and dedication of our national veterans are the precious foundation that made today's Republic of Korea possible," Ham said. "Hana Financial Group will continue to fulfill its social responsibility as a financial institution by providing meaningful support that reflects our gratitude and respect, and by standing alongside veterans and their families."

Meanwhile, Hana Bank has continued its veterans-focused financial and social contribution initiatives, including the June launch of the "Daehanminguk Manse" savings account, which offers preferential interest rates for veterans and uniformed service members.
