Gangdong-gu in Seoul announced Tuesday that its Gangdong Han River Greenway Warming-Up Station project has been selected in the Seoul Metropolitan Government's open call for 2027 design and landscape projects.
Nine autonomous districts submitted a total of 13 project proposals for the competition. After a review and presentation process, five districts — including Gangdong-gu — had their projects selected.
The project site covers approximately 1,250 square meters at the front of the Naruteo-gil entrance in the Cheonho-dong 256-2 area. The district plans to invest a total of 800 million won ($565,000) — split evenly between Seoul city and district funds at 400 million won each — with basic and detailed design work scheduled for 2027 and construction set to begin in 2028.
The Gangdong Han River Greenway Warming-Up Station is designed to transform the gateway area connecting Cheonho Bicycle Street to the Han River into a hub where pedestrians, runners and cyclists can warm up or rest before and after accessing the river.
During the design process, the district plans to review on-site conditions and user feedback to improve access routes to the Han River and upgrade the environment for pedestrians and cyclists.
Alongside this, the district will enhance rest areas, nighttime pedestrian conditions and wayfinding systems to improve user convenience and safety.
The project aims to link the commercial activity along Cheonho Bicycle Street with the walking and running demand at the Han River, so that visits and extended stays by river users translate into vitality for the local economy.
Once complete, the project is expected to strengthen a lifestyle and leisure hub connecting Gangdong-gu's key waterfront spaces — including Cheonho Bicycle Street, the Han River, Amsa Green Trail and Godeokcheon Lounge. The district plans to develop the warming-up station into a signature waterfront destination that residents and visitors will return to regularly.
"Being selected in this competition is a meaningful achievement that links Gangdong-gu's distinctive assets — Cheonho Bicycle Street and the Han River — into a single lifestyle and leisure corridor," district mayor Lee Su-hee said. "We will work to create a safe and convenient gateway to the Han River, build an attractive waterfront destination that residents and visitors will love, and ensure that the energy of the Han River flows into the local commercial district."
