Coupang Fulfillment Services joins government campaign to prevent heat-related illness

Coupang Fulfillment Services (CFS) announced Wednesday that it had joined the Ministry of Employment and Labor's Bucheon branch in a public-private campaign to prevent heat-related illness and promote workplace safety culture during the summer.

CFS hosted the "4th Logistics Industry Safety Culture Practice Relay Campaign" at its Bucheon 1 Center in Ojeong-dong, Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, together with the Bucheon branch of the Central Regional Employment and Labor Office and the Gyeonggi Central branch of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency. CFS joined as the fourth participant in the relay campaign, which the Bucheon branch has been running across the logistics sector since July.

Attendees included CFS environment, health and safety (EHS) staff, Kim Seon-hui — head of the industrial accident prevention and supervision division at the Ministry of Employment and Labor's Bucheon branch — labor inspectors, Jeong Hyeok, head of the construction health division at the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency's Gyeonggi Central branch, and other officials.

Before the main event, participants toured the Bucheon 1 Center's work floor to inspect pinch-point and collision hazards and review fire prevention measures. They also urged workers to recognize and respond to signs of heat-related health problems during extreme heat.

Officials then distributed cups of ice, electrolyte drinks and heat illness prevention supplies to workers at the Bucheon 1 and 2 centers and partner companies. They also shared five basic heat illness prevention guidelines: staying hydrated, using cooling equipment, taking rest breaks, using cooling gear and calling 119 in an emergency.

CFS has designated June through September as a "special extreme-heat management period" and has activated heat illness prevention measures. The company is expanding its HVAC project to increase cooling capacity at major centers nationwide, and has set up air-conditioned rest areas on work floors stocked with ice water and ice cream.

"Coupang places worker safety as its top priority and works hard to manage safety on the ground," a CFS official said. "We will continue to actively participate in public-private cooperation to help embed a culture of safety across logistics operations."
