Yoon Poong-young to head SK hynix's Global Growth TF

Yoon Poong-young, president of the SK Supex Council, has been appointed to lead SK hynix's Global Growth TF. The move is seen as a bid to accelerate SK hynix's global expansion by drawing on his experience driving AI transformation and investment strategy.

According to industry sources Friday, Yoon will retain his role as SK Supex Council president while concurrently serving as head of the SK hynix Global Growth TF.

SK hynix established the Global Growth TF last month, assembling more than 10 technical leader-level staff to pursue overseas business expansion and identify new business opportunities. The appointment is widely read as a signal of SK Group's intent to combine its AI infrastructure business with SK hynix's memory chip competitiveness.

Yoon is regarded as one of SK Group's leading innovation strategists. Born in 1974, he graduated from Yonsei University with a degree in mechanical engineering, completed an MBA at INSEAD in France, and then joined SK Group.

He has since held a series of senior roles across the group, including head of growth business planning and head of strategy planning at SK C&C (now SK AX), executive vice president for corporate planning and business development at SK C&C, head of the PM Group and Corporate Center at SK Telecom, chief investment officer and executive vice president at SK Square, and president of SK AX. In October last year, he was named president of the SK Supex Council, the group's central control tower.

Yoon participated in SK Telecom's acquisition of SK hynix and, as CIO of SK Square, helped launch the "SK ICT Alliance" — a coalition of SK Square, SK Telecom and SK hynix — and established the US subsidiary of Sapeon, South Korea's first AI semiconductor company for data centers. At SK C&C (now SK AX), he focused on expanding the company's future business portfolio into digital factory, generative AI, digital ESG and cloud services.

Yoon is expected to focus on coordinating collaboration among SK Group affiliates around the AI data center business and identifying new business opportunities with global big-tech companies.
