Hyundai Motor Group, army, Ministry of Trade sign three-way MOU
Deal aims to boost troop safety and streamline military support operations
Technology to be tested at army's Pangyo AX hub
Hyundai Motor Group is pushing to deploy physical AI in military settings through a civilian-government-military partnership. The initiative aims to use advanced technologies such as robots and AI in dangerous or repetitive tasks to improve troop safety and streamline military support operations. On the civilian side, the group expects that real-world validation in military environments will sharpen the technology and open the door to broader applications in industrial settings.
Hyundai Motor Group signed a memorandum of understanding with the army and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on Friday at army headquarters in Gyeryong, South Chungcheong Province, covering the expanded use of robots, physical AI and advanced technologies. The signing ceremony was attended by Army Chief of Staff Kim Gyu-ha, Vice Chief of Staff Choe Jang-sik, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy Director General for Industrial Growth Lee Min-woo, and Hyundai Motor Group Executive Vice President Lee Hang-su.
The defense sector has faced growing pressure to adopt automation and intelligent technologies as a shrinking pool of military-age personnel and rising demand for advanced capabilities reshape the landscape. The MOU is designed to assess how physical AI and other cutting-edge technologies can be applied to national defense and to advance related pilot projects. The parties plan to focus particularly on finding ways to reduce the burden of hazardous or repetitive support duties.
Under the agreement, Hyundai Motor Group, the army and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will cooperate across a broad range of areas: reviewing how physical AI can be applied in the defense sector; building a pilot testbed and running trial operations; conducting joint civilian-military research on AI data and other core technologies; exploring uses in hydrogen mobility and hydrogen infrastructure; and seeking links with the "Saemangeum AI Valley" to expand the physical AI ecosystem going forward.
For physical AI applications in defense, the parties will examine options including logistics automation, supply transport, and perimeter and safety inspections. Proposals selected as pilot projects will be deployed on testbeds built within the army and validated for reliability and usability in actual operating conditions.
Alongside this, the army's Pangyo AX hub — which begins full operations this year — will serve as a site for joint civilian-military research, including analysis of data gathered during pilot projects to identify areas for improvement. The military AX hubs are civilian-government-military-academic convergence ecosystems being established at five locations, including Pangyo for the army, to help the army, navy and air force rapidly integrate the latest civilian AI technologies into defense.
The parties also agreed to discuss potential applications in hydrogen mobility and hydrogen infrastructure. Earlier, Kia completed performance evaluations of a hydrogen-powered light tactical all-terrain vehicle with the military in May last year. The partners also plan to explore links with a robot manufacturing cluster and AI data center to be built at the Saemangeum AI Valley in the future.
To ensure smooth cooperation, Hyundai Motor Group, the army and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will each take on distinct roles. Hyundai Motor Group will provide personnel and technology for development and pilot testing, and will continuously improve performance and usability by incorporating feedback from troops gathered during the process.
The army will provide testbeds for technology validation and support the necessary infrastructure — including communications — to ensure stable trial operations within the military. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will develop industrial policy to foster physical AI and advanced technologies, and will support linkages between the domestic robotics industry ecosystem and defense demand.
The parties will form a consultative body and designate project-level operational leads to strengthen execution. Through this, they expect the initiative to contribute to military modernization while using validation in the demanding military operating environment to refine the technology and expand its application into civilian sectors such as industrial sites.
"This MOU will serve as the foundation for civilian-government-military cooperation in applying physical AI and advanced technologies to the defense sector," a Hyundai Motor Group official said. "Through technology validation and joint research that reflects real-world demand, we will contribute to building a safe and efficient military support system and to strengthening South Korea's physical AI competitiveness."
