The Ulju-gun Council held a traditional Confucian rite at Daeseong Hall of Eonyang Hyanggyo in Samnam-eup on Friday, pledging responsible legislative service on behalf of local residents.
Council Speaker Jeong U-sik attended the ceremony alongside first-term lawmakers Hwang Yun-dae, Kwon Jung-geon, Jeong Jae-hun and Jang Dong-hui, as well as members of the local Confucian community.
The rite, known as "goyu-je," is a traditional Confucian ceremony performed when a significant event occurs at the national or local level, in which participants inform the sages of their intentions and renew their resolve.
The lawmakers offered ritual cups of wine before the spirit tablets of Confucius and other sages, vowing to faithfully represent the will of residents and pursue responsible legislative work for the development of Ulju-gun and the improvement of residents' welfare.
Speaker Jeong and the attending lawmakers said they would "carry out legislative activities for residents with humility and integrity, in keeping with the teachings of the sages."
