"Odyssey" surpassed 5 million admissions Monday, just one day after crossing the 4 million mark on Sunday.
Distributor Universal Pictures announced Monday morning that the film had exceeded 5 million admissions — 13 days after its Aug. 5 opening.
The milestone pushes "Odyssey" past director Na Hong-jin's "Hope," which drew about 4.475 million admissions, to claim fourth place among this year's releases at the box office. It is now within striking distance of third-place "Gunche," which has logged about 5.952 million admissions.
The film has been building its audience at a rapid pace, crossing 1 million admissions on its fourth day of release, 2 million on its sixth day and 3 million on its tenth.
Since its opening, "Odyssey" has held the No. 1 spot on the daily box office chart, edging out "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," also known as "Spider-Man 4."
Based on Homer's epic poem "The Odyssey," the film follows the homeward journey of Trojan War hero Odysseus and is the first in history to be shot entirely on IMAX film. Its sweeping visuals and the grandeur of the Greek mythological world it depicts have drawn widespread praise.
As of 10:30 a.m. Monday, "Odyssey" led advance ticket sales with a 70.7 percent share, far ahead of "Spider-Man 4" at 15.2 percent and the animated film "Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway" at 2.7 percent.
With about 703,000 advance tickets already sold, the film is expected to maintain its dominant run at the box office for the foreseeable future.
