Moon Seon-ok, head of the Hongcheon District Office of Education under the Gangwon Province Office of Education, donated 7 million won ($4,960) in scholarships for local high school students on Wednesday, just over 10 days before her retirement at the end of this month.
She handed 1 million won each to the principals of seven high schools, asking them to pass the funds to students who are struggling so they can continue their studies.
The scholarships will be distributed through each school's recommendation process to students who, despite difficult circumstances, have shown dedication to their schoolwork and are working toward their dreams.
Moon said she decided to make the donation as a way of expressing gratitude to the community and students who supported her throughout her long career in education.
"The greatest reward of my life as an educator has been watching students discover their own potential and grow," she said. "I hope this scholarship serves as a small word of encouragement for students who refuse to give up on their dreams despite difficult circumstances." She added that she would continue to support students as they learn to love the communities they live in and pursue their dreams boldly in the wider world.
