The Democratic Party of Korea's central ethics tribunal has dismissed an expulsion complaint against Jeong Dal-seong, head of the Cheongcheong Yurangdan group and a former member of the Gwangju Buk-gu council, who faced allegations of proxy voting during the party's national convention online ballot.
Jeong said he was notified Wednesday by the central ethics tribunal that it had dismissed the expulsion complaint filed by the party's central National Election Commission.
Jeong had been active in supporting Democratic Party leader candidate Jung Chung-rae. He faced the proxy voting allegations after guiding an elderly party member through the online voting process during the national convention, and the party's National Election Commission filed the expulsion complaint over those allegations.
Jeong demanded a reconsideration, saying the member had cast the ballot personally and that he had only explained the online voting method and procedure. He began a hunger strike on Aug. 13 in protest.
"Justice has prevailed, and this is the most natural outcome," Jeong said. "If sufficient fact-finding and an explanation process had been conducted from the start, it would never have come to this."
