YouTuber known for crime-exposé content sentenced to 7 years for W4.7b used-car fraud

Immanuel, a YouTuber known for crime-exposé content, has been sentenced to prison and taken into custody in a first-instance ruling on fraud charges worth billions of won.

Seoul Central District Court's Criminal Division 34, presided over by Judge Han Seong-jin, sentenced Immanuel to seven years in prison on Aug. 11 and ordered him detained in the courtroom. He faced charges including aggravated fraud and extortion under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes, as well as intimidation.

He had originally been indicted while in detention but was released on bail on the condition that he wear an electronic ankle monitor, allowing him to stand trial without being held. With the prison sentence handed down, however, his bail was revoked and he was returned to custody.

Immanuel, who has 570,000 subscribers on a channel dedicated to exposing criminal activity, also serves as the head of a used-car dealership.

He was indicted on charges of aggravated fraud for allegedly using doctored photographs to present vehicles that had been completely written off in accidents — and thus had no market value — as normal cars, then using them as collateral to obtain about 3.06 billion won in credit loans between April and December 2023. He recruited individuals in whose names the loans were taken out, securing the funds through used-car installment credit loan schemes.

Immanuel also faces charges of obtaining 1.63 billion won ($1.17 million) in loans in August 2023 by falsely claiming he would generate profits by buying and reselling high-end foreign used cars. He had in fact planned to use the loan proceeds for business expenses and other purposes, the court said.

He is further accused of extorting 620 million won from an acquaintance of a former company vice president — who had embezzled company funds and later died by suicide — by threatening to post a video about the acquaintance's alleged involvement in the embezzlement unless paid. He also faces a separate charge of threatening an investor in his company, warning he would upload a video about the investor's criminal record to avoid returning the investment.

Additional charges include operating an unregistered vehicle rental business from January 2019 to September 2023, in violation of the Passenger Transport Service Act.

The court found him guilty on all charges except part of the unregistered vehicle rental count. "The defendant exploited loopholes in the used-car installment credit loan process and structure to defraud lenders, with total fraud damages reaching 4.69 billion won," the court said. "The gravity of his criminal liability is severe."

The court said it took into account as mitigating factors that he confessed to some of the offenses and showed remorse.

Since his release on bail, Immanuel had remained active online, including waging a public exposé campaign on YouTube targeting Kim Se-ui, head of the YouTube channel Garosero Research Institute.
