Park Geun-hye to attend People Power Party lawmakers' retreat for first time in over a decade

Former President Park Geun-hye will attend the People Power Party's National Assembly members' retreat in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, on Thursday — her first appearance at an official party event in more than a decade.

The PPP floor leader's office announced Wednesday that Park is expected to attend the "2026 People Power Party National Assembly Members' Retreat" at Sono Calm Goyang.

PPP lawmakers will hold the two-day retreat at Sono Calm Goyang starting Thursday. The gathering is intended to map out strategies for confronting the ruling party ahead of the regular legislative session and to strengthen internal party cohesion.

Floor Leader Jeong Jeom-sik visited Park's private residence in Dalseong-gun, Daegu, on Wednesday, Aug. 19, to formally invite her to the retreat. At the time, Park said she would "review whether to attend," while urging the party to unite, saying that even as a minority opposition party, the PPP could win greater public support in future elections if it worked together to give people hope.

Political observers say it is highly unusual for a former president to attend their party's parliamentary retreat in person. Park is expected to emphasize intraparty harmony at the event.
