Singer Gree addresses malicious comments targeting his stepmother

Gree, a singer and son of broadcaster Kim Gu-ra, has come forward to clear up public misconceptions about himself and his stepmother.

A video titled "I will address the allegations myself" was posted to Gree's YouTube channel Friday. In it, he read through subscribers' comments one by one and responded directly to various misunderstandings surrounding him.

He first pushed back on comments calling him "kind" or saying he "turned out well," saying, "I'm not trying to seem kind, and I'm not particularly kind either." He also questioned the sympathy directed at him, asking, "Do I seem pitiful to you?"

What drew the most attention was his discussion of family relationships — particularly with his stepmother and younger sibling.

Responding to comments that he looks sullen around his stepmother and other family members, Gree said, "That's just how my face looks. Even when I'm excited, it doesn't really show."

He also said that after he posted a Parents' Day video, a flood of malicious comments targeted his stepmother, adding, "What appears on camera is not everything."

That video showed Gree visiting his family with gifts for Parents' Day. It drew a wave of comments suggesting his stepmother had not looked after him properly — remarks such as "Good Donghyun, giving all those gifts and just leaving," "Donghyun must have wanted a home-cooked meal — why didn't she tell him to stay for dinner?" and "She sent him away without even feeding him."

Gree addressed those comments directly. "When I went over, she gave me juice and cake," he said. "She never lets me leave empty-handed." As for why his stepmother did not appear on camera, he said, "There was a camera there, and I thought it might be awkward if she stepped into the frame, so I turned it down myself."

He added, "That place is also my home. It's a house I can freely come and go from," and said he had no grievances at all. He doubled down, noting that he and his stepmother had been in contact until recently, and said, "There are really no problems between us."

Meanwhile, Kim Gu-ra divorced in 2015 and remarried in 2020, wedding a non-celebrity woman 12 years his junior. The couple welcomed a daughter in 2021.
