2.8 kg rock crushes brand-new car in Busan parking lot; suspect never found

A 2.8-kilogram rock fell onto a parked vehicle at a parking lot in Busan's Haeundae district, prompting a police investigation that failed to identify a suspect after nearly two months.

According to the Busan Haeundae Police Station, a rock measuring 19 centimeters by 12 centimeters and weighing 2.8 kilograms fell onto a sedan parked near Haeundae Beach on July 10.

The rock pierced the vehicle's roof and was found near a child safety seat in the back.

No one was in the car at the time, so there were no injuries. The vehicle had been purchased only about two weeks earlier, making the property damage significant.

Police determined the rock had fallen from a nearby corridor-style apartment building and launched an investigation. They identified a rock of similar shape among stones used to prop open iron doors in the building and canvassed residents for information.

Police also requested DNA analysis from the National Forensic Service but ultimately could not identify anyone connected to the incident.

"We have classified the case as an unsolved matter under monitoring and plan to reopen the investigation if a similar incident occurs," a Haeundae Police Station official said.
