Artillery shells from Korean War found at elementary school; all students sent home

Ten artillery shells believed to date from the Korean War were discovered at an elementary school construction site in Gangwon Province, prompting the military to remove them.

A worker at an elementary school in Seo-myeon, Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon Province called 112 to report the discovery at around 10:53 a.m. Monday, according to Yonhap and other outlets.

The shells are believed to be high-explosive rounds used by South Korean forces during the Korean War.

Military authorities determined there was no risk of explosion or any anti-aircraft threat, and an explosive ordnance disposal team removed all 10 shells.

Following the discovery, the school sent its roughly 20 students home after lunch.

Police and military authorities plan to determine the exact type and origin of the recovered shells while also checking for the possibility of additional finds.
