Busan gears up for its largest grassroots sports festival

The 37th Busan Citizens' Sports Festival, the city's largest grassroots sports event, will bring together some 20,000 residents and amateur sports enthusiasts over two days, Saturday and Sunday, at the Busan Sajik Indoor Gymnasium and other venues.

Held annually to broaden participation in grassroots sports, promote residents' health and strengthen community ties, the festival is co-hosted by Busan Metropolitan City and the Busan Metropolitan City Sports Council. It is organized by 16 district and county sports councils and member sports organizations. It stands as Busan's flagship community sports festival, offering every resident a chance to pursue health and vitality through everyday athletics.

This year's festival will feature an opening ceremony and eve celebration, competitions in 15 grassroots sports, and a citizens' participation zone, offering a range of programs for residents and sports enthusiasts alike.

The opening ceremony and eve celebration will take place at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Busan Sajik Indoor Gymnasium, drawing roughly 6,000 residents, athletes and officials. The pre-ceremony events will open with a "grand mass dance," featuring a performance by the Busan Citizens' Military Band. Athletes from the 16 districts and counties will enter accompanying the band, performing routines that highlight their local characteristics. The official program will proceed in the following order: an opening declaration, a progress report, opening remarks, a welcoming address and congratulatory speeches. This will be followed by an opening performance, an athletes' oath, and a prize drawing.

Following the official program, invited singers Park Seo-jin, Son Tae-jin, Kim Jo-han and Jeong Da-kyung will perform a celebratory concert spanning genres from trot music to classical vocals and R&B ballads, appealing to audiences of all ages. The eve celebration is open to anyone without a ticket, and prize drawing tickets will be distributed on-site on the day of the event.

Starting at 9 a.m. Sunday, representative athletes from the 16 districts and counties will compete in interdistrict matches across sports. Fifteen sports will be featured, including kumdo (Korean swordsmanship), gateball, ground golf, jokgu (a Korean foot-volleyball game), jump rope, gymnastics and gukhak gigong (a traditional Korean qigong-based exercise). Also included are table tennis, volleyball, tennis, badminton, bowling, soccer, park golf and taekwondo. The events will be held at venues including the Busan Sajik Indoor Gymnasium, Samrak Ecological Park and the Busan Asiad Auxiliary Stadium. Other venues include the Busan Comprehensive Indoor Tennis Court, the Gangseo Indoor Gymnasium and the Gijang Football Village.

During the festival, a citizens' participation zone open to all will run at the Sculpture Park inside the Busan Sports Complex, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

"Grassroots sports are a precious force that connects neighbors and generations while adding vitality to local communities," Mayor Jeon Jae-soo said. "I hope this festival becomes a place of unity where all 16 districts and counties, together with every resident, come together through grassroots sports."
