Nakdonggang institute showcases freshwater bio-AI water tech at international water forum

SANGJU -- The National Institute of Nakdonggang Biological Resources held a presentation and discussion session Wednesday at Korea International Water Week (KIWW) 2026 at EXCO in Daegu, under the theme "Protecting the Future Water Environment With Freshwater Organisms, AI and Biotechnology."

At the session, the institute shared findings on how freshwater biological resources can be used to improve water quality, address environmental problems and reduce carbon emissions. Researchers particularly discussed the future direction of water environment management technology through case studies combining the characteristics and functions of freshwater organisms with AI and biotechnology.

The session was organized around two themes: water environment improvement technology based on biological resources, and resource conversion and carbon reduction technology based on biological resources. It featured a total of five presentations followed by a question-and-answer session.

"Responding to climate change and complex water environment issues requires a range of approaches that link the functions of biological resources with advanced technologies such as AI," said Yong Suk-won, director of the National Institute of Nakdonggang Biological Resources. "We will continue to expand the development of sustainable water environment technologies using freshwater biological resources and strengthen cooperation in related fields."
