Assembly Speaker Cho Jung-sik: 'Youth voices still underrepresented in politics'

National Assembly Speaker Cho Jung-sik attended the signboard ceremony for Korea Youth Assembly, an incorporated association, held at the National Assembly's Communication Center on Thursday.

"I find it very meaningful that Korea Youth Assembly, which began preparations in 2023 and completed its registration as a corporation affiliated with the National Assembly last October, is holding its signboard ceremony on Thursday," Cho said. He also congratulated the new start of Korea Youth Assembly, which brings together young leaders from the ruling and opposition parties. He stressed the need for active support to help young politicians grow.

That day, Cho said, "Recently, various issues related to young people have become a social topic, but representation that can reflect the voices of youth in politics is still lacking." He added, "The proportion of people in their 20s and 30s in South Korea stands at about 25 percent, but lawmakers under 40 number only 14, or 4.7 percent of the National Assembly, and those elected in the June 3 local elections who were under 40 numbered just 403, or 9.8 percent."

Then he said, "Going forward, in order for South Korea to become a country that can give young people hope, the scope of youth politics must be widened." He added, "In this regard, I believe Korea Youth Assembly will become a precious ground for nurturing young people's dreams and hopes."

Cho also said, "I hope young people in our country will spread their dreams and open up a bright future through Korea Youth Assembly," adding, "I will support them as well."
