Ulsan to upgrade greenbelt facilities for residents

Ulsan will move ahead with infrastructure upgrades and resident convenience projects in its development-restricted zones, or greenbelts, next year after five of its proposals were selected for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's 2027 resident-support project for such zones.

With the selection, Ulsan will spend a total of 4.14 billion won ($2.79 million) — 3.73 billion won in state funds and 414 million won in local funds — to widen roads and refurbish trails within the greenbelt areas.

Of the five projects, three are lifestyle infrastructure initiatives aimed at easing residents' daily inconveniences caused by insufficient roads and sewage systems, while two are environmental and cultural projects meant to create leisure spaces for city residents, including trail maintenance and landscape improvements. They are a landscaping project for Iphwasan Natural Recreation Forest in Jung-gu (900 million won); refurbishment of the Yeompo Nurigil trail in Buk-gu (900 million won); widening of the access road to Bokgol village in Eomul-dong, Buk-gu (630 million won); widening of the access road to Gaseo village in Gadae-dong, Buk-gu (818 million won); and construction of a connector road between Donghaean-ro and Mipo Industrial Road in Dong-gu (480 million won).

"With these projects selected, we will be able to expand infrastructure within the greenbelt zones to ease residents' daily inconveniences and create pleasant leisure spaces where citizens can relax," an Ulsan city official said.

Since 2001, Ulsan has invested a total of 155 billion won — 115.8 billion won in state funds and 39.2 billion won in local funds — in the greenbelt resident-support project, expanding roads, trails and green leisure spaces across the city.
