Makhachev names Gary as future champion after his reign ends

UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev, widely regarded as the sport's active greatest of all time, has named the fighter he expects to claim the title once his reign ends.

In a recent interview with Russian outlet Ushatayка, Makhachev assessed the skills of three leading contenders — Carlos Prochazka, Shavkat Rakhmonov and undefeated Michael Morales.

"Honestly, I think Prochazka, Shavkat and Morales are all on the same level," Makhachev said. "Prochazka is dangerous because of his striking power. Morales has a very big frame and is a threat both in wrestling and striking. Shavkat is also an extremely tricky opponent when you look at his overall skill set."

Makhachev reserved his highest praise, however, for Ian Machado Garry, whom he faced most recently. Garry fought Makhachev the distance at UFC 330, losing by unanimous decision after five rounds.

Having shared the octagon with Garry for 25 minutes, Makhachev ranked him among the most dangerous and formidable fighters in the welterweight division. He also predicted Garry would capture the title once he steps away from the championship.

"I think one of the most dangerous and tricky opponents I've faced was Ian Garry in our last fight," Makhachev said. "After I'm no longer champion, I think he will be the one to become champion."

Garry expressed regret after the defeat in a recent interview, saying he should have been more aggressive and that he would win a rematch.

An immediate rematch appears unlikely given the current queue of contenders and questions of fairness to other challengers. Many fans and UFC brass have also criticized Garry for what they described as excessive friendliness toward Makhachev during their bout, arguing it dulled the sharpness and intensity of the contest.

Makhachev has repeatedly denied rumors of early retirement and confirmed he intends to keep competing. His win over Garry at UFC 330 in August extended his UFC winning streak to a record 17 consecutive victories and made him the fifth fighter in history to successfully defend titles in two weight classes, having previously held the lightweight championship.
