Daegu city council budget committee passes second supplementary budget

The budget and settlement special committee of the Daegu City Council reviewed the fiscal 2025 settlement accounts of Daegu city and the Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education, as well as the city's second supplementary budget proposal, from Thursday through Monday, approving all items as originally submitted.

Daegu city drew up the second supplementary budget at 12.61 trillion won ($9.36 billion), a 406.5 billion won increase, or 3.3 percent, from the original budget of 12.2 trillion won, citing the need to support economic recovery and lay the groundwork for future growth.

The Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education posted revenue of 4.51 trillion won and expenditure of 4.39 trillion won in its settlement accounts.

The committee said the supplementary budget reflects a policy direction aimed at stabilizing livelihoods and covering mandatory expenditures under difficult revenue conditions, while continuing investment in emerging industries. It also urged the city to pay close attention to fiscal soundness going forward.

The committee also adopted a resolution calling on the central government to reconsider its plan to establish a future response fund, which it said undermines local autonomy, and decided to submit the resolution to a plenary session.

The supplementary budget bill is set to be put to a vote at the third plenary session on Wednesday.

Kim Ju-beom, chairman of the budget and settlement special committee, said that if local government resources are reduced, essential livelihood projects and urgent initiatives will inevitably suffer. "Please bear in mind that the budget is a precious resource for people's livelihoods, and make every effort to ensure its execution so that citizens can feel the real benefits — without any waste," he said.
