Visitors soak in island culture and the charms of Yeosu
An international cruise ship carrying Japanese tourists docked in Yeosu on Monday, with passengers visiting the Yeosu World Island Expo to experience the city's island culture.
According to the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo organizing committee, the Mitsui Ocean Cruise vessel, carrying 215 passengers, arrived in Yeosu on Monday and visited the main expo venue in Dolsan-eup.
The tourists toured exhibition halls at the Jinmo district main venue, taking in a range of displays on island nature and the environment. At the International Exchange Island zone, they also took part in hands-on programs including island culture activities, traditional costume try-ons and roulette events.
The visit marked a case of international cruise passengers extending their port call into an expo visit, offering an opportunity to introduce overseas tourists to the appeal of both the expo and Yeosu's island tourism.
Jo Hyeong-geun, head of the planning division at the expo organizing committee, said the second showing of the International Exchange Island zone would feature exhibition spaces for the Gwangju-South Jeolla integrated special city and Kochi Prefecture in Japan — which marks the 10th anniversary of its sister-city exchange with the region this year — showcasing each area's culture, food and tourism offerings.
