19.9 billion won to be invested from 2026 to 2030 across 12 projects in 4 segments, from Amsa Chorok-gil to Garaeyeoul Village
A 120-meter green bridge linking Godeoksan to the Han River, an observation deck and ecological trail — connected to a food street to draw Han River visitors into local commercial areas
A 4.9-kilometer stretch of Han River waterfront in Seoul's Gangdong-gu, running from Amsa Chorok-gil to Garaeyeoul Village, is set to be transformed into a green leisure corridor encompassing walking, rest and ecological experiences.
Gangdong-gu District Mayor Lee Su-hee held a press briefing at the site Tuesday afternoon to announce the formal launch of the "Gangdong Han River Greenway" project, which aims to connect the district's historical, cultural and ecological assets with the Han River.
The district plans to invest a total of 19.9 billion won ($14.7 million) — comprising 17.9 billion won in city funds and 2 billion won in district funds — across 12 detailed projects in four segments between 2026 and 2030.
The four project segments are Amsa Chorok Eum-gil, Han River Nuri-gil, Godeok Ecological Nubim-gil and Yeoulma-ru Shelter-gil. Each segment will be developed to reflect the history, ecology and surrounding environment of its area, improving access to the Han River and giving each zone a distinct character.
The centerpiece segment, Han River Nuri-gil, will feature an approximately 1.3-kilometer ecological observation trail stretching from the Amsa water intake facility to the Godeoksan area. Ecological interpretation and observation facilities will be installed while preserving the existing natural environment and surrounding landscape as much as possible, allowing visitors to learn about and experience the Han River's nature up close.
A roughly 120-meter green bridge will also be built to reconnect Godeoksan — currently cut off from the Han River waterfront by the Olympic Expressway — with the riverside. The bridge will include green space and pedestrian areas on top, making it more than a transit link and turning it into a place where people can linger and enjoy nature.
An observation deck will be built on Godeoksan, offering panoramic views of the Han River and the surrounding natural landscape.
The project will also strengthen a wider pedestrian axis connecting the existing Seoul Dulle-gil trail with the Han River waterfront, linking Amsa Chorok-gil, Godeoksan, Godeok Riverside Ecological Park and Godeokcheon stream to create a continuous walking route from residential areas to the Han River.
Amsa Chorok Eum-gil will be developed as a space where visitors can experience both history and nature. It will connect Amsa History Park, Amsa Chorok-gil and Amsa Ecological Park, and will include a community garden, wildlife habitats and a history-and-ecology-themed walking trail.
Godeok Ecological Nubim-gil will focus on improving connectivity among the Godeok Gangil public housing district, Godeokcheon stream and Godeok Riverside Ecological Park. Bicycle rest areas will be added and the entrances to the ecological park and pedestrian routes will be reorganized so that residents can conveniently access ecological and leisure spaces close to where they live.
Yeoulma-ru Shelter-gil, centered on Garaeyeoul Village, will be developed as a new gateway for Han River visitors. Amenities to be added include an ecological parking lot, restrooms, a self-service bicycle repair station and pedestrian rest areas.
The district also plans to create a "Gangdong Han River Food Street" in partnership with local restaurants to draw Han River visitors into the surrounding commercial areas.
Gangdong-gu said it will carefully review the conditions for each individual project and coordinate with relevant agencies, while preserving the existing natural environment as much as possible and creating walkable rest spaces that residents can tangibly benefit from.
"The Gangdong Han River Greenway is a project that goes beyond simply viewing the Han River — it connects points all along the waterfront so that residents can walk, experience nature and stay," District Mayor Lee said. "We will build the green leisure corridor from Amsa Chorok-gil to Garaeyeoul Village without a hitch, weaving together Gangdong's history, nature and the Han River into one."
