'Gravity' director Alfonso Cuarón to visit Korea for first time at BIFF

Alfonso Cuarón, a two-time Academy Award-winning director, will attend the Busan International Film Festival — marking his first visit to Korea.

The Busan International Film Festival secretariat confirmed Friday that Cuarón will attend the 31st edition of the festival, set to open next month.

Cuarón will be present from the opening ceremony on Oct. 6.

He will take part in a post-screening audience discussion following an IMAX showing of his film "Gravity" (2013) and is also scheduled to lead a master class.

Cuarón has won the Academy Award for Best Director twice — for "Gravity" and "Roma" (2018). "Roma" also took the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival.

Cuarón, whose credits include "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," drew wide critical acclaim for "Gravity," released in October 2013.

He is widely recognized for his signature long-take technique. In "Gravity," he employed digitally composited long takes running more than 10 minutes, while "Roma" featured sweeping, unbroken shots that surveyed entire spaces.

The Busan International Film Festival, launched in 1996, is considered Korea's first international film festival.

Held each year in early October, the 10-day event draws films across a wide range of genres. It has long served as a launching pad for filmmakers and a platform where rookie actors and those yet to break through can attract wider attention.
