As the K-content and entertainment industry expands rapidly in global markets, legal disputes and risks tied to shifts in business structures — including exclusive contracts, intellectual property and investment and distribution arrangements — are on the rise.
In response, law firms are moving to establish dedicated teams specializing in the entertainment industry.
Law firm Lin launched an entertainment team composed of specialist attorneys to handle legal issues and disputes across the entertainment and content sectors, according to legal industry sources Thursday.
The entertainment industry has seen boundaries blur across music, video, gaming and over-the-top streaming, giving rise to a widening range of legal risks — from disputes over the validity of exclusive contracts and rights of publicity to mergers and acquisitions, management control battles and unfair trade practices.
Lin's newly formed entertainment team plans to offer one-stop legal counsel by drawing on specialists across corporate M&A, intellectual property, litigation, fair trade and platform regulation.
"Behind the rapid growth driven by K-content lies structural legal risk and disputes that are difficult to predict," said Do Hyun-su, head of Lin's entertainment team. "We will focus on resolving the legal risks facing companies, production houses and artists through collaboration among specialists in each field."
