Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon attended the 76th anniversary ceremony commemorating the recapture of Seoul at Seoul Plaza on Saturday morning, honoring the spirit of those who gave their lives for the nation and reflecting on the historic significance of the Sept. 28 liberation of the capital.
The ceremony drew about 2,000 attendees, including Gen. Xavier T. Brunson, commander of the Combined Forces Command Korea, Deputy CFC Commander Kim Sung-min, Marine Corps Commandant Ju Il-seok, Korean War veterans and members of the Marine Corps Veterans Association.
"The recapture of Seoul on Sept. 28, 1950, was a historic victory that reclaimed the heart of the Republic of Korea and rebuilt a free nation," Oh said. "The solidarity forged between South Korea and the United States on that battlefield grew into the ROK-US alliance after the war, and today it stands as a firm foundation upholding the freedom and peace of the Republic of Korea."
He added that "it is our responsibility never to forget who fought and who sacrificed for the freedom we enjoy today," and that "remembering to the end those who gave everything for their country is a mark of national dignity — Seoul will repay that noble sacrifice with the highest honor."
