Ground-breaking set for October, completion targeted for 2028; the new complex will span two below-ground and four above-ground floors. A temporary office opens Monday to maintain resident services during construction.
Songpa-gu in Seoul will relocate its Songpa 2-dong community center to a temporary office and begin operations there Monday, ahead of construction on a new multipurpose civic complex.
The temporary office will occupy the sixth and seventh floors of Dongwon Building at 94-35 Songpa-dong — the building that houses the Songpa Agricultural Cooperative's Songpa-dong branch. It will run the community center, the autonomous residents' hall and the dong administrative headquarters, providing civil services and community programs throughout the construction period.
The existing Songpa 2-dong civic hall, built in 1989, is more than 30 years old. Its cramped layout and aging facilities have made it increasingly difficult to meet growing demand for civil services, cultural programs and welfare support.
In response, the district will combine the site of the current building with that of the nearby Sonamu Hill No. 4 small library to create a single integrated complex. Ground-breaking is planned for October, with completion targeted for 2028.
The new building will rise at 173 Songpa-dong, spanning two below-ground and four above-ground floors with a total floor area of 2,454 square meters. Facilities will include a fitness center, a shared kitchen, a parking lot, a Saemaul library, a multipurpose hall, a community lounge and the Sonamu Hill No. 4 small library.
Songpa-gu has been upgrading its community centers since the start of the eighth elected-term administration. The Jangji-dong community center reopened as a multipurpose complex in December 2025, and new buildings in Pungnap 2-dong and Macheon 1-dong are on track for completion next year. With the Songpa 2-dong ground-breaking now added to the pipeline, aging community centers across the district are being transformed one by one into spaces built around residents' needs.
Each new community center is also being tailored to local needs. Macheon 1-dong will gain a Kium child-care center and a kids' cafe, while Pungnap 2-dong will include a daycare facility. Songpa 2-dong will incorporate the small library and be reborn as a multipurpose cultural space.
"Community centers are the frontline of public administration, closest to where residents live," Songpa-gu District Mayor Seo Gang-seok said. "We will go beyond simply putting up new buildings and fill each neighborhood's center with the facilities it actually needs, turning them into spaces that genuinely improve people's lives."
