Construction workers can earn W20,000 gift voucher for using electronic card 15 days a month

The Construction Workers' Mutual Aid Association will give 3,500 construction workers who actively use their electronic cards mobile gift vouchers worth 20,000 won ($14) each.

The association announced Monday it will run a promotion through Nov. 30 to encourage construction workers to use their electronic cards and prevent missed retirement benefit accruals.

Workers who use their electronic card for 15 or more days in a single month during the promotion period are eligible. Those who newly install the "Geonseol-eum" mobile app and then use their electronic card may also take part.

Interested workers can apply by submitting a form via a QR code or link posted on the Geonseol-eum website or mobile app. The association will select 3,500 applicants and provide each with a 20,000-won mobile gift voucher.

The electronic card system lets construction workers record and manage their own work history by tagging an electronic card on a terminal when arriving at and leaving a job site. It was introduced to prevent underreporting of workdays for retirement benefit purposes, curb wage theft, and support systematic career management for construction workers.

The system currently applies to all workplaces required to enroll in the retirement benefit program. The association said it needs to raise awareness among construction workers about using electronic cards to help the system take firm hold.

"The electronic card system is a tool that lets construction workers record their own work history and manage their careers," said Jang Geon, chairman of the Construction Workers' Mutual Aid Association. "We hope this event will further encourage the use of electronic cards."
