Jensen Huang rebuffs AI doomsday warnings, says chance of 2030 apocalypse is 'zero'

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has directly rebuffed warnings that AI could drive humanity to extinction within years, calling such predictions an exaggerated doomsday narrative.

In an interview with CBS News on Sunday (local time), Huang said 2030 "is not going to be the end of the world — the probability of that is zero," adding that "scaring people is unnecessary and irresponsible." He also said the doomsday claims were "not grounded in science."

Huang said Nvidia would move "as fast as we possibly can" but would "never ship a product that is not ready and not safe," and said he saw no reason to slow down. "Everyone wants us to do well and make America more prosperous," he said.

He also opposed new AI regulations, arguing that existing laws — including product liability statutes and cybersecurity rules — were sufficient. "Apply those first," he said. "Don't let doomsday be an excuse to get out from under existing law."

Asked about Nvidia's business interests in the matter, Huang said the company's success was "directly tied to deploying products and services safely."

His remarks came amid growing calls from inside and outside the industry to slow the pace of AI development.

Jacob Coxon, who worked at OpenAI starting in 2023 before moving to Anthropic earlier this year, wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on his last day of work that "AI developers genuinely believe AI could kill us all before the end of this decade."

Coxon went on to say that neither company was acting responsibly, writing that they were "gambling with our lives." The post was viewed more than 150 million times on X, according to the US business outlet Quartz.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said Sept. 12 that AI companies should slow their development pace. He proposed allowing outside evaluators to be embedded within AI firms, with the same level of access as employees, to monitor systems and model training. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, publicly expressed agreement.

Donald Trump, meanwhile, wrote on Truth Social on Sept. 14 that claims AI would take over the world and destroy humanity were a "hoax," alleging a "disgusting conspiracy" targeting AI and data centers. CBS said Huang aligned with Trump on the issue.

Nvidia supplies chips for model training to major AI companies including OpenAI and Anthropic. With a market capitalization of approximately $5.3 trillion, it is the world's most valuable listed company.

An NBC News poll found that 70 percent of American adults said they were more worried than hopeful about AI.
