BC Card launches 'Modoo Green Card' with up to 20% rewards on public transit

BC Card is launching a new credit card that returns up to 20% of public transit spending as points, with benefits extending beyond buses and subways to cover KTX trains, express buses, electric and hydrogen vehicle charging, and shared mobility services.

BC Card announced Monday that it is releasing the "Modoo Green Card" in partnership with the Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and other relevant agencies. The card is an eco-friendly product linked to the government's K-Pass public transit subsidy program, offering enhanced transportation benefits on top of existing K-Pass perks.

The Modoo Green Card's rewards and K-Pass reimbursements are provided separately and can be received simultaneously. K-Pass refunds 20 percent or more of transit costs — depending on user type — for those who use public transportation at least 15 times a month.

The Modoo Green Card accumulates up to 20% of transit spending as Ecomoney points, with the rate determined by the cardholder's total spending in the previous month. Previous-month spending thresholds are set at 300,000 won ($217), 600,000 won and 900,000 won, and the monthly cap on transit-related point accumulation is 16,000 points.

Benefits also extend to long-distance and eco-friendly transportation. Users earn up to 20 percent back in Ecomoney points when paying for KTX, express buses, electric or hydrogen vehicle charging, and shared mobility services.

The card also covers daily commuter expenses. Cardholders earn up to 4,000 points when using any of six coffee brands — Starbucks, A Twosome Place, Ediya Coffee, Compose Coffee, Mega Coffee and Paul Bassett — between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., or when dining at restaurants between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The card's total monthly points cap is 28,000 points.

The Modoo Green Card is available through iM Bank, Kyongnam Bank, Suhyup Bank, Gwangju Bank, Jeju Bank and BC Baro Card. Annual fees range from 8,000 won to 13,000 won ($9), depending on the issuing bank and card brand.

The product is also tied to the government's Korea Green Transformation, or K-GX, policy initiative. On Monday, BC Card signed agreements with the Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Korea Transportation Safety Authority and the Korea Environmental Industry and Technology Institute at its Euljiro headquarters in Jung-gu, Seoul, to promote the green card program.

"We plan to continuously develop the green card program based on close cooperation with the Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and other relevant agencies," BC Card President and CEO Kim Young-woo said.
