Wolsong nuclear plant demonstrates integrated anti-drone defense system

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power's Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant headquarters held a demonstration of its integrated anti-drone defense system Monday, drawing about 40 officials from relevant agencies in North Gyeongsang Province.

The event was organized at the request of the National Intelligence Service.

Attendees received briefings at the Wolsong headquarters' integrated situation room on the plant's security status and the current state of its integrated anti-drone defense system, before observing a live demonstration simulating real-world scenarios.

The demonstration assumed an unidentified drone approaching the nuclear plant and showcased the facility's response capabilities across four escalating alert levels — Attention, Caution, Alert and Serious — covering detection, identification, tracking and neutralization.

Wolsong headquarters plans to use the demonstration to share its anti-drone defense capabilities with key agencies and to strengthen cooperative frameworks enabling rapid information sharing and joint response among relevant organizations in the event of a drone threat.

"We will continuously upgrade the integrated anti-drone defense system — the first of its kind at a nuclear power plant — and work closely with the NIS and regional agencies to do our utmost to ensure nuclear safety and protect critical national facilities," said Kwon Won-taek, head of Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant headquarters.
