Robber who broke into actor Nana's home indicted on false-accusation charges after counter-filing

A man in his 30s who broke into the home of actor Nana — a former member of the girl group After School — only to be overpowered by her and her mother has been indicted on charges of filing a false accusation. He had previously counter-filed against Nana, alleging attempted murder and aggravated assault after sustaining a neck injury during the struggle.

According to legal sources, the First Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office indicted the man, identified only as A, 34, on false-accusation charges without detention on Sept. 16.

A broke into Nana's home in Acheon-dong, Guri, Gyeonggi Province, at around 5:38 a.m. on Nov. 15 last year, armed with a weapon. He threatened Nana and her mother and demanded money before the two women subdued and held him until police arrived. He is currently standing trial on those charges.

Nana and her mother each sustained injuries requiring 33 days and 31 days of medical treatment, respectively, while restraining A.

In December last year, A filed a false police report alleging that Nana had stabbed him with a weapon inside the home and then tried to persuade him to say he had brought it himself, offering him 40 million won ($29,400) to go along with the story.

After police declined in January to forward A's complaint to prosecutors, Nana counter-filed against him on charges of false accusation.

A was indicted in custody in December last year on charges of robbery causing injury and was sentenced to seven years in prison by a lower court. Prosecutors sought 10 years — the same term they had requested at trial — in the appeal, and a second-instance ruling is scheduled for Oct. 22.

The latest indictment stems from A's counter-filing against Nana on charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault, in which he claimed he suffered a neck injury while being subdued.

The Namyangju Branch Prosecutors Office received the case from police in April and transferred it to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office — which has jurisdiction over the Seoul Detention Center where A is held — on Sept. 11. Prosecutors conducted a supplementary investigation based on victim testimony and forensic analysis of A's mobile phone.

Prosecutors determined that the false-accusation charge was substantiated after gathering circumstantial evidence, including a statement from a fellow detainee at a police holding facility who said A had admitted to bringing the weapon to Nana's home himself.
